Year in Review
2024: Strengthening Legacy Partnerships
In our fourth year, the Judith Campbell Educational and Community Foundation awarded a total of $591,160 in grants to our community partners and to our scholarship recipients.
Changing our foundation’s grant structure to be an invitation-only grant application process in 2024, we worked with 22 of our Legacy Partners to award $385,160 in grants to support their hard work. These Legacy Partners include, among others: Just in Time for Foster Youth, who works tirelessly to give former foster youth critical support, essential resources and a caring community; K9s for Warriors, who we work with to fund the highly specialized training of service dogs who will then go on to support military veterans; and Ride Above Disability, a new JCEC partner who does great work teaching recreational and therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults of all ages with disabilities.
We were very proud to award $206,000 in scholarships in 2024, spanning across 20 individual recipients and 2 partners (Carlsbad Educational Foundation and ProKids.) These outstanding high school seniors will be continuing their education at University of California San Diego, University of California Los Angeles, and California State University San Marcos. We also awarded several scholarships to returning recipients, who maintained a GPA above 2.75 and continue to work hard toward their college degrees.
2023: Expanding Our Reach & Commitment
The Judith Campbell Educational and Community Foundation finished our third year by awarding a grand total of $547,905 to our community partners and scholarship recipients.
On the community grant side, we gave $405,160 across 22 different partners to help fund their empowering and impactful programs. Some of our grant recipients include The Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego, where we specifically help support their outstanding Big 8 Sports program, enabling 1,000+ middle school athletes to play and complete in their school sports programs; Student STEM Days at Fleet Week San Diego, which allows students throughout San Diego County the ability to participate in Fleet Week’s Innovation Zone to learn and see all of the new technologies in the military; and Project Next, where we help fund their Future Centers to help high school students gain the skills they need to prepare for life after high school.
On the scholarship side, we awarded $142,475 in scholarships to high school seniors continuing their education in college, community college and trade schools. These scholarships included seven direct scholarships and three through our partner organizations (Carlsbad Educational Foundation, San Dieguito Academy, and Pro Kids.) Our 2023 scholarship recipients are pursuing their college degrees at University of San Diego, Chapman University, and San Diego State University among other schools.
The Judith Campbell Educational and Community Foundation also gave $10,000 to the Hawaii Community Foundation, sending our support to their community after the terrible devastation from the Maui wildfires.
2021-2022: Launching Impactful Community Support
The Judith Campbell Educational and Community Foundation finished our first two years by awarding $525,000 in grants to 26 partners, and $175,000 in scholarships throughout San Diego County.
With the mission to empower youth and the broader community primarily in San Diego County, JCEC’s inaugural grant distributions spanned 26 non-profit organizations, including partners such as Pro Kids Golf and the Carlsbad Educational Foundation. Among this year’s grant recipients working to make long-term community impact, causes ranged from organizations investing in providing support to victims of domestic violence (Kathy’s Legacy), support for families of Camp Pendleton (Pendleton Community Service Fund), and groups providing transitional housing and support for injured military personnel (Wounded Warrior Homes.)
JCEC awarded $125,000 in educational scholarships through community partners, as well as $50,000 direct JCEC scholarships to San Diego high school seniors. Scholarships ranged from $7,500 to $15,000 and included schools such as the University of California Santa Barbara, The Fashion Institute of Technology, and Arizona State University.
JCEC specifically enjoyed working with the Carlsbad Educational Foundation to fund 820 5th grade students’ participation in Junior Achievement’s BizTown, a popular learning experience that allows elementary school students to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, and vote for mayor, thereby connecting the dots between what they learn in school to life in the real world.
